Post by Pastor Dave (Jeremiah 31:31-34)
God wants nothing more than to have a relationship with Creation – with the people that were created. So God covenants, promises to help solidify those relationships.
God calls Abraham to help put the world back together and promises him land, offspring, and blessings
God calls Noah to ride out the flood with his family and 2 of every animal and then promises never again to send that much water.
God calls Moses to lead God’s people out of Egypt, and then gives 613 rules that help define what it means to be God’s people.
And then those same people find themselves in bondage in Babylon, a long way from home.
And God calls Jeremiah and tells him to proclaim a new covenant. A covenant not like the other covenants.
What’s so different about this one?
Maybe this verse…”I WILL FORGIVE THEIR INIQUITY, AND I WILL REMEMBER THEIR SINS NO MORE.”
There are some earthshattering words in the Bible. Maybe none more earthshattering than those!! It’s one thing to forgive. It’s quite another thing to forget. To forget so completely that it’s as if it never even happened in the first place!!!
Try it sometime. And then tell me how difficult forgetting really is!!
