What’s in Your Mirror?

Post by Pastor Dave  (Mark 13:24-37)

Mark 13 is called “The Little Apocalypse”.  It talks about the end of time, the coming of the Reign of God into the world.

Verses 24-27 assures us that God is in control.  This is still God’s world and God’s reign will be done in it, according to God’s timetable and not our own.

Verses 28-31 tells us the time of the coming reign is “near.”  Does that mean next week, next year, 15 years from now?  We don’t know.  People have been guessing for the last 300 years, and we still don’t know.  Part of the issue revolves around which timetable we are using – God’s or ours!  We live in a 24/7 world.  A minute is 60 seconds.  God’s world is not governed by that timetable.  The old hymn says it best – “A thousand ages in thy sight are like an evening gone.”  So “near” could mean next week or the next millennium!!  We just don’t know.  And it is not our position to know!!

Verses 32-37 reinforces that not knowing.  Nobody knows when the final days will come.  Not even Jesus.  Only God knows.  So what are we to do in the meantime?  How do we wait?  We are called to “Watch”.  Because God can come in the evening, at midnight, at cockcrow, or in the morning.

Verses 32-37 reinforces that not knowing.  Nobody knows when the final days will come.  Not even Jesus.  Only God knows.  So what are we to do in the meantime?  How do we wait?  We are called to “Watch”.  Because God can come in the evening, at midnight, at cockcrow, or in the morning (verse 35). In fact, God HAS ALREADY COME at those times.  In the first coming of Jesus.  Jesus is already here in some sense.  And He will keep coming into our lives, right in the middle of the normal, everyday events of life.  In the evening when we are eating dinner after a long day at work or school. At midnight when we are trying to get to sleep.  At cockcrow when we are being tempted by Satan.  In the morning when we are resurrected to a new day and a new sense of hope.  In other words, instead of spending too much time worrying about that which we cannot know, maybe we should spend our time looking for the hints of God’s presence already here!!  Listening for the whispers of God voice in our lives!!!

What are the hints of God’s presence in your lives, the whispers that come into our lives from the voice of God?
