Tapping a Super Hero

Post by Pastor Stephen

Matthew 22:15-22 is quite a trap the Pharisees and Herodians laid for Jesus, eh? If he says you should pay the tax to the emperor, then all of the revolutionaries are going to cry foul that Jesus is a heretic and betraying God’s reign for the rule of Cesar. If he says to not pay the tax, then he and his movement will be in open revolt against Rome and will be crushed. It’s a clever trap for Jesus, our hero. He just rode into Jerusalem on the donkey to waving palm branches and shouts of “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Parenthetically, you should note that this is the same shout we echo every Sunday at communion to welcome our Lord into our presence. Back in Jerusalem, Jesus is heralded as the king, then the trap is set. What will our hero do? Will his movement fall apart as he subordinates it to Cesar? Or will he plunge them into open conflict with Rome. Let’s find out in this week’s episode of “The Gospel according to Matthew!”
