Peter looked to Jesus for his salvation as he sank into the stormy water; the Canaanite woman of Matthew 15 kneels and does the same. Despite her being a foreigner and enemy of God’s people, Jesus recognizes great faith in her! What flowed from her heart was great faith.
Between Jesus walking on water and Peter’s little faith, and the Canaanite woman’s great faith is a question of what defiles a person. What messes up a person? What makes them unclean? Is it what they eat and wear? Scripture says so. But scripture also says it’s what is on the inside… as Jesus points out. He goes on to say “The things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these defile you. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what defile you; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile you.”
You know, that might be a good word for us today in 2017. What should our heart look like? Perhaps we can take the Canaanite woman as our example?
